I'd love to buy a canteen, but being unemployed, I am unable to spend much. I saw a Scout Canteen from TexSport advertized in the Campor catalog for $3.99. That's my kind of price, but I thought I'd ask you fine folks for an opinion. What do you think?

Craig, It's a decent unit for the price. Just remember you will have to pay shipping. Campmor is pretty fair, charging a set rate. Barry @ Blueline is close and may have canteens. I know people who simply recycle a cleaned fruit, soda or water bottle and add a shoulder strap or belt loop. Just clean with hot water and a bit of baking soda.Cheap and easily replaced.

Thanks for replying, Chris. Thanks, also, for reminding me about Barry. I like Campmor a lot, but I'd rather support small business when I can. I'll see what he has (provided I can dig up his email address).

Save your money and recycle some plastic beverage bottles. Look for ones with wide mouths and reasonable capacity - typically about one liter or so. My favorite is Gatorade - as light and cheaper than any commercial product, and no heartburn when it goes by-by.

Plastic bottles are bulky when empty, which may be consideration. If you must have no bulk, light weight, and don't mind the money, get Platypus water bottles -- about $6 for a liter cotnainer.

I keep a small water bottle that I re-use. I chose the smaller bottle so it would fit better in my PC carry backpack that I lug about everyday. I also wrapped a few turns of duct tape around it as someone (I think Tom) suggested.

Lats week a fellow passenger on the train noticed it as I was taking a drink. She asked why there was duct tape around it. I told here "Just in case I might need it for something, to repair or patch things or even as a temporary bandage in an emergency." "Cool." she replied, just like the new IBM commercial.
