Well, I agree that declaring a "gun-free" zone is kind of an exercise in futility at best, and outright madness at worst. Of course some paranoid schizophrenic loser with a death wish and a grudge against society is going to head right for a "gun-free" zone like a moth to a searchlight.
On the other hand, maybe the solution isn't to arm the entire country, but to find a way to prohibit the sale of guns to paranoid schizophrenic losers.
My problem with Ted Nugent's solution is that it seems to me, if everyone in the street is carrying a gun, there is a much greater risk of someone over-reacting and shooting an innocent person. Even undercover cops get shot by their own fellow officers, and they are presumably aware of the risk and trained in how to minimize it.
On the other hand, maybe he does have a good case that a certain number of responsible adults - principals and vice-principals, for example - should perhpas have access to firearms and proper training. And teaching students that when a psycho stops to reload his Glock, that's probably the best opportunity to get together and beat the YKW out of him.
