I think a small stuffed animal like the TY beanie babys would be a good addition for a 5 year old girl who is lost. If you get them all the same you could use it in conjuction with the book to teach survival to kids.

That's a great kit for kids!!

I did a similar thing with my Cub Scouts a few years back when I was a den leader.

I went the route of using less gear on a small fanny pack in hopes they would be more likely to carry it more often.

Here is what we put together:

Fanny pack
Whistle w/ coiled wrist lanyard
Photon LED light
2 33 gallon orange plastic bags

First Aid Kit
First Aid Bag
4 - 3/4" 3M Active Bandage Strips
4 - 1" 3M Active Bandage Strips
3 - 3"x3" Gauze Pads
1 - Small Roll Adhesive Tape
1 - Small Soap in bag
2 - Latex Gloves in plastic bag
2 - Antibiotic Ointment
2 - Insect Sting Wipe
1 - Tweezers

The only thing I can advise for your kit is some tweezers and a plastic bag or sheet to use to sit on if the ground is wet - their poncho can cover the top of them. They might also use it to collect trash too.

Great ideas.

The kids have already added their personal items as well as personalized their packs.

A trash bag has also been added since the initial set up.

Funny thing is I was just talking to my daughter (the older one) several days ago when she brought up the topic of her pack. I forget all the details, but the one thing I wanted to do was to add a fanny back or a belt pouch kit that would always be on their persons so they still have some basic items even if they ditch their packs.

This was supposed to start off as a fanny pack kit, but I found the bright yellow kid sized backpacks at not too much more than the best price I found for fanny packs, so I bought the packs instead. The good part is they ended up with way more gear which they use regularly.

I really wanted to add a camera, but couldn't find a digital camera with removable memory for the price of a disposable. These kids like to take pictures and they take pretty darn good ones. My kids regularly use my cameras and they are careful with them and the pictures are good.

I would remove the alcohol-prep pad's and just leave the wet-naps in there. Do the kid's know then to use wich? Also, wet-naps don't sting so much as alcohol-pad's when trying to clean wounds.
