     like most bits of gear it's made to fit the needs and 
  abilities of those who chose to use it..the New Zealand Army
  used the thermettes widely in WW II...Irish fisherman were
  using their version at the turn of the century..in a sitution
  where there was no fuel to be spared or had, it would be worth
  it's weight in gold,,well maybe silver--anyway..there are 
  thermettes made of tin that are lighter..and--not every bit
  of gear made for survival needs to fit in a band-aid box with
  10 other things..i don't have a BOB..i don't think i'll ever 
  need one,but if i lived someplace where i had to get in my car
  and try to get away from a disaster of some sort i would want
   one of these in my trunk along with the canned food and tent.
    but then again you have seen my honking huge packs---
