I don't do much with carabiners except to hang things from them off of my belt/pack/life jacket.
I also use "easy Links". They are found in hardware stores, made of galvanized steel, and they are securely closed by screw threads and can be left loose or you can tighten down on them to prohibit them from ever backing off (opening up) of their threads.
"Easy Links" are not a replacement for the carabiner but there are uses where, IMHO, they are superior in the functions that they can be used for.
"Easy Links" come in a large variety of sizes. I'm willing to bet that they will be preferred for some of the roles that people are using the carabiner for, at this time. Please keep in mind, I like carabiners and use them where their functions fit best, just like the "Easy Links".
