There used to be a great survival cooking webpage written by a Brit. It started off with makinig omelets and souffles. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore. If anyone remembers seeing it and has a link to it or a copy of it, I'd love to get a look at it again. Any help?

Survival Cooking with Simon Mulholland:

http://www.indistinct.co.uk/combat-online/cook4.htm

This guy is a hoot!

"Survival training when televised always seems to involve skinning rabbits in the rain and looking depressed at the result. This is hardly surprising. Skinning rabbits isn't done for fun, its done because otherwise the hairs get stuck in your teeth. If you haven't practised separating wild food from its wrapper, why bother depressing yourself with soggy rabbits... ?

Must be an interesting reading...

Thank you so much for finding this Susan- this guy is hilarious. I usually don't laugh like that in the morning unless some has broken something.

Awesome! Thank you. I've always thought this was one of the better texts on cooking and survival.

I'm only half thru the web page and the only reason I'm not ROFLMAOOLing (?) is because I'm currently at work ( grin grin ), at the office !!!

And I certainly doesn't understand each and every pun/joke... blush

So, I have to say I really like what Simon Mulholland writes in these cooking articles. Besides being funny, he seems to give solid information on cooking and to a lesser extent gathering food. For people who have read through (thoroughly or just scanned) what do you think? Is there anything he left out you would have like to see included?

I read all of it while I was supposed to be working. blush My thoughts: the guy is right on and really, really funny. True, your food won't be perfect the first time you follow his advice but he states that and tells you to practice. His tips are brilliantly simple.

The MOST useful thing I thought he stated was the observation that there are hundreds of books on wild edibles but nothing on identifying farmers crops and how to tell when they are ready to eat. An average person may walk for miles past ripe wheat looking for some wild yoyodyne berries or what have you. It made me realize I need to find out what crops are grown in the area, when they are ready to eat and how to prepare them!

Reminds me of a story (doesn't everything?). I like to attend "living history" events and at one some renactors were complaining about the corn on the cob they were trying to cook. No matter how long they boiled it it never got very soft and tasted lousy. Turns out they didn't know the difference between sweet corn and field (dent) corn. I know my corns but I can't tell soybeans from cotton or when the local rice should be harvested. Time to learn!

California tried to help with that crop identification thing once, along I-5 in the middle of the state. They went along about a 100 mile stretch, posting nice metal signs on the perimeter fences identifying the crops on the other side. And never changed the signs. So a sign saying "Cotton" might now be in front of a tomato field, and next month a wheat field, and three months later a lettuce field...
