One handed operation for the sparklite. Able to direct the spark more accurately to the tinder materials.
The flint and steel typically sends a 'shower' of sparks to the tinder.
I prefer the sparklite bec of the more concentrated (albeit smaller) sparks. And the one handed operation.

There are three ways to do things. The right way, the wrong way and the right easy way. Sparklite is the right easy way. In an emergency situation I want to start a fire fast. At the first drop of rain you don't have a lot of time. I have never used flint and steel so would be very slow with this procedure. My kit never goes anywhere without the old military heat tab in green foil package. It will light and burn in rain.

Regards
Bruce

I just put together a tin for a younger cousin. He is in the Marines. (dont ask me why, he comes from a family full of military and civillian pilots. He must have hit his head on something) Anyway, I dont have time to wait on a sparklite to be shipped so I went to the Boy Scout supply store in town and picked up one of their flints. I threw away the provided striker and broke a hacksaw blade to fit in the tin. I prefer a sparklite, but a flint rod and a hacksaw blade run a close second on ease of use.
I cut the plastic handle off the flint so it would be smaller when I put it in the tin.

Rather than think in terms of A vs. B, I think of A and B. the best of matches are finite based on quantity . The Sparklite is my favorite fire making tool and tinder. For it's size I can carry sufficient sparklite tinder tabs for extended duty. The metal match can literally make thousands of fires with properly gathered tinder. I carry all three. I like to stay warm.
