I found an old handyman book lying around my in-laws house the other day. It suggested dipping standard matches in linseed oil and letting them dry. I tried it with standard strike anywhere matches. After they dried, I put one under water. When I pulled it out it lit on the first strike. I suppose that it works.

I tried it also without the same results. Maybe I didn't let it dry long enough.

I let them dry for over eight hours.

That sounds like a good trick. I have also coated matches with clear nail polish, which works. I've heard varnish works also.
