I moved to OKC last summer, and since torando season is right around the corner I was looking to buy a tornado radio. I've heard of storm type radios which you leave plugged in and turned on, but are quite until a storm activates them. Then, they'll let out a nice loud screech that'll wake you up and get your attention. Since I'm a heavy sleeper, I'd like to have something like that next to my bed instead of relying on the tornado sirens to get my attention.
I've looked online, but to be honest I can't figure out a lot of the technical stuff they're saying. Anyone have any info on how this system works or what a good radio would be? Thanks.

Have you checked out the NOAA Weather Radio site?
I think they do a pretty good job of explaining how the technology of the weather alert radio works.
I don't own one of these radios, so I can't really make a suggestion on which one to buy.

Try to get one with SAME technology. That way you can program in only the areas you want warnings for, like your county (or your's and the next one over for more advanced warning). Some of the better ones also let you turn off the warnings for Amber Alerts, heat advisories, ozone warnings, etc. They are usually fairly easy to program. The older ones without SAME go off all the time and become annoying pretty quickly.
