Just a suggestion, but maybe you could remove the packaging for the tape and chapstick to reduce bulk ?

Execllent idea. I sometimes leave the items in their origional packaging to show stundents, then later remove it for packing.

Follow-up: Its all packed in a zipper make-up case from Target. I like that its tough, though not waterproof, and you can see the contents.

Follow-up notes:

I've been carrying this for 6+ months now. Its got a few twists on a standard kit -- a fresnel lens, cheap signal mirror and CPR mask.
The knife is light, flat and mid-sized -- three things I like for a kit knife.

It lacks food, shelter or a container to use for purifying the water; but I use it for biking/ hiking, so I have a water container along.

I have had my most carried kit evolve into this. Mostly because it is amaller and lighter then most my PSK or FAK. Just the basics. If you don't carry it then it will do you no good.

I'd remove some of the packaging and use a pencil instead of a pen (smaller and lighter, sharpenable(?heh). I'd also add some things and remove some others. I'll comment with more nifo when I have more time, sorry for the short reply.
