I've previously used 35mm film canisters to store small objects in my PSK, BOB and FAK and have found them to be very useful. During this recent cold/flu season, a friend gave me a tube of Airborne with one tablet left and suggested I take it. I'm not saying if the stuff works or not but 2 days later I was coughing, sneezing, etc. The plastic container on the other hand is great!

Not only is it bigger than a film canister but if you pop off the top and look under it, there seems to be an oxygen absorber built right into the lid. I can see this being a real advantage for storing fire making materials or anything else where moisture could be a problem. I bought a generic tube and it had the same feature (was a lot cheaper too).
