That other toilet paper can heater thread got me thinking about those Nuwick candles again. While not as major of a heat source as those toilet paper things, I'd think one or two of these in a stuck car would be a whole lot safer. Nothing (much) to spill that would risk setting your whole car on fire. A single candle can reportedly warm up a snow cave nicely, so maybe they'd do OK in a car.

Has anyone actually used any of these? Prices seem to vary all over the map, but I did find a few online places that had the 144 hour models for under $9 (can't remember the S&H though). I've yet to find any locally in the Denver metro area. I've checked a few outdoors and army surplus type stores with no luck.

I'm testing a couple of these now. As I am back in Florida, it may be a while before I am back in a cold area to do a reliable test. I got mine at Nitro-Pak in Heber City, Utah. Looks like a good product. Movable wicks and matches included inside the tin.

Have used them for years. Reliable - work - using 3 - 5 wicks they are quite a little heater and a sooty, but useful, stove! I was in a tent at +10 F nr Lake Mississaugua a few years back and a Nuwick (or something like it - now long gone) with 5 wicks made a real difference in a smallish tent with two people in what would have been very cold and unpleasant conditions. The Northern Lights were terrific that week, though.

I keep two 44-hour and two 120-hour candles in each adult kit.

Bear in mind that the alcohol/coffee can/TP heater can absorb quite a lot of alcohol. The candles, OTOH, *will* have some hot liquified wax once they're going. Properly filled, the alcohol burner is unlikely to spill liquid fuel.

I'd like to see one of those heaters made with 100% cotton TP (Purely Cotton brand) as opposed to wood pulp paper to see if it makes a difference.
