Where can I find a flint rod as seen in Ray Mear's extreme survival ? I got a flint 'n' steel in my PSK but I am just looking for a rod that I can strike with the back of my knife. It doesnt have to be the same as Ray's but one that is reliable, dureable and easily taped onto my knife sheath.

Charles Houtchens, 915 NE 65th Street, Vancouver, WA 98665. (360) 695 - 8561. Various lengths and diameters, with or without magnesium, reasonable prices, and particularly good service. 1/4 " X 2 " ferocerium rods without magnesium were about $3.00 each in quantities of 2 or more.

http://www.light-my-fire.com that's the home page for the sweedish fire steel, very good flint rods.I've had a few and there the best i've found nice big chunky ones. good for every day use. Designed by Lars Felt (sweedish survival expert). There the ones Ray Mears uses.
-james

I can't tell you what he eats for breakfast but, yeah I think thats what he's done. Makes it easier to use the back of a knife. And less bulk, I've allways er'ed away from that. The fear of losing my knife and having a useless flint rod with nothing to strike it with would well.. [censored] me off rarther.
Still it does make a nice compact unit with your simple most important tools in one place on your belt.
do you have any of the other gear he recommends?
I have the Sandvic Laplander folding saw that he sugests and uses, I really like it and have used it loads. Cuts hard- wood well.
I can't remeber the folding saw, althought its rings a bell. About nothing to strike the flint with well, I got one in my SAK as back up but at the moment I am practicing making fire with only sparks and dont really like to take it out, put everything back etc. So I lke one on my sheath. Thanx for the info
PS have you seen Ray making a bow saw in the German forrest (on his program)?
Reinhardt
