I was wondering what types of things folks carry with them, in addition to their EDC gear, when they go skiing? (SDC - Ski Day Carry?)

Certainly, your clothing needs to be able to handle skiing conditions. I also consider, however, that more severe sometimes, are the conditions going up the ski lift, particularly on windy days, and/or if the lift is stopped for any reason. Although I don't usually ski with a hood, it's nice to have one on your parka to pull over your hat or helmet when going up the lift. It would also be helpful if you fell, got hurt, and had to hunker down for a while. Appropriate layering, gloves, neck gaitor, hat, etc.

In addition to my ordinarly EDC kit, I tend to carry a couple extra things when skiing. (I'm assuming we're at an organized downhill ski resort, not wilderness backwoods skiing, that would dictate much more, probably a pack full of stuff.) Typically, I'd have a couple energy bars or a bag of GORP in my parka, along with a couple of hand warmers. I'd have some kind of Chap Stick, or equivalent. Sun glasses and/or goggles. Usually I'll have a small container of water or gatorade in a flat flask canteen in my jacket pocket. I think it holds about 8 oz.

Since I'm usually skiing with a family and maybe a group of families, we all carry FRS radios. I will also have a cell phone with me. No PLB, at least not yet. I'd also have a whistle for getting attention, in case I was off trail, but, that's EDC anyway on my keychain. I don't EDC a compass, but, there is one on the ski parka zipper pull.

My EDC will give me light, fire, signalling... usual stuff. Do you folks take a lot more with you to augment that for skiing?

I'm not a skier (I hate the dreaded white stuff), but if I were, I would always rent one of those gizmos to help rescuers find me if I got buried...

We have a site link, sadly now dead that was geared to skiing. If I recall, a single LARGE non sticking telfa type bandage was included for the typical injuries one might suffer. My last set of cross country skis were made of proper wood and leather from Norway. I wouldn't venture to comment on contemporary gear, but the article mentioned specific tools and spare parts for field repair of bindings. I'd mention the Finnish Lahti with winter glove trigger guard and ingenious chambering assist lever I carried in Alaska. Shelter.

A bag, space blanket etc. (whatever you feel comfortable with). I'd expect getting stuck in bad weather would be the biggest problem, in which case you need to hunker down quickly. In bad weather an instant shelter is an absolute life saver, and there are several sorts that will fit in your pocket.

I'm a skiier and spend a lot of my (winter) retirement time skiing here up in the Italians Alps which are located just outside my door step.

And so I'll be glad to tell you what I usually carry...

A lightweight survival kit (you should know which one if you've seen my latest posts or bio) along with one of those lightweight "non-cheapo" but more durable/heavy duty space blankets and several candles that will last up to 24 hours. So I can use'em as a sauna under my space blanket.

Plus my cellular, a hand-crank cellular battery charger carried in one of my para-reserve containers. But it's worn around my waist instead of over my shoulder so it doesn't get in my way while I'm skiing.

Works for me!

Acctually my skiing day carry is slimmed down big time. Just a leatherman, few pain killers, snickers bar, camera, trail map and my id. I crashed few times with full pockets of "junk" and still remember the pain. I can't deal with fanny packs or backpacks either. In the end it also depends where I ski. If it's a local mountain above will be my carry if that's a mountain I don't know I will throw a bottle of water. As long of course as we are talking about down hill skiing.

trail map, watch....

Besides my ski's I carry extra ski rope, towels, a bathing suit, and suntan lotion in the boat with me. And definitely sunglasses. <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Oh, wait, you're not talking about water skiing here in Florida, are you? <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

ouch, that was rough <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />, hadn't thought about that...my water skis are in the boat, which is shrink wrapped and under a blanket of snow... we're still in the white stuff up here...maybe by JUNE I'll be able to think about water skiing.

I always carry 20 feet or so of 6 to 8mm rope. My daughter even does this and has found it handy when she has fallen on a hard slope and wants to walk down the slope and tie her skis to the slope and lower the skis down the slops so she ahs her hands free. I always think of rappelling off the chaif if it is stuck, I can always dreem. Just an added adventure, LOL.
