If your new unit has the loose pot flange to lid fit, I am afraid making a watertight seal is very difficult. It is supposed to be loose to let excess steam escape. I tried tape, various rubber flanges and silicone. They all failed and compromised the cooking utility . I've gone to simply bagging the items internally I stash in mine. Now give us a field review.

OK - I'm out on bivouac in ten days. If I can scare up a digital camera I'll report back in detail. I think you're probably right on the seal - I'm still not sure why that's really necessary, at least in the application I have.

Hard to Judge scale and size, 16CM is the only measurement given. Anyone have an idea how they compare size wise to the Trangia Mess Tin? I'm using the Trangia now and would think the S.S. rice box would be better for heating and cooking in.

Based on my rice box and the Trangia measurements I would say they were about the same except the rice box is shallower. That's its drawback, in my eyes. It could be a little deeper to make the best boiling "pot." But for my bag it fits well and is large enough for my "one-man" needs.
