I've been looking for a cheaper (but functional) substitute for the pricey British tins for a survival kit container. My spec was for something that would fit in one half of my Tactical Tailor med bag (which I use for my wilderness E & E bag), stainless, hold my small items and function as a water boiling/cooking vessel. I think I found it at $3.50!!
SS Rice / Lunch Box
These are used for lunches (rice portion as I understand) in Asia. I got one of the small ones and it fits and works perfectly! It doesn't have a rubber seal in the lid but that's not an issue for me since all my kit is waterproofed. You could add a seal pretty simply if needed. BTW, the med bag combo is ideal, IMHO, for a belt based, wilderness PSK or E & E. At under 3 lbs. includes all essentials including shelter and food for 3 days - indefinitely with fishing, trapping gear in it and addition of my long gun and ammo. I'm a happy camper!

Those look like the ZEBRA brand made in Indonesia. the forum made a group buy some years past. You should measure the goss volume by water in cups.I've easilly cooked rice in mine with an ESBIT stove.

Yeh, much like the Zebra, I suppose. I own some Zebra stuff and this isn't that brand - I think actually thinner/lighter (therefore cheaper!). I like all of it. Sorry - I didn't know about the group buy. I don't feel like a Pioneer now! I've used it with my little homemade alcohol stoves and it works great for one-person backpack meals too. I'm really keen on carrying something that can boil water - mainly. And is "flattish". This things perfect.

One more plug for this particular pot (over the Zebra I own). This one has that long, SS wire handle - very handy!

Au contrair ( thats french, a little of the language of romance for valentine's day ) but you do get bragging rights. These things were nearly impossible to find when microwaves eliminated the metal lunchboxes. If your new unit has the loose pot flange to lid fit, I am afraid making a watertight seal is very difficult. It is supposed to be loose to let excess steam escape. I tried tape, various rubber flanges and silicone. They all failed and compromised the cooking utility . I've gone to simply bagging the items internally I stash in mine. Now give us a field review.

Merci beaucoup, mon ami!

OK - I'm out on bivouac in ten days. If I can scare up a digital camera I'll report back in detail. I think you're probably right on the seal - I'm still not sure why that's really necessary, at least in the application I have.

Hard to Judge scale and size, 16CM is the only measurement given. Anyone have an idea how they compare size wise to the Trangia Mess Tin? I'm using the Trangia now and would think the S.S. rice box would be better for heating and cooking in.

Based on my rice box and the Trangia measurements I would say they were about the same except the rice box is shallower. That's its drawback, in my eyes. It could be a little deeper to make the best boiling "pot." But for my bag it fits well and is large enough for my "one-man" needs.
