There are special chatracters you may want to type like a ¢ (cent) sign or £ (pound) sign or ± (plus/minus) sign. The way to do it is to hold the ALT key and use the numbers on the right side of the keyboard ( numbers on the first row of the keybaord wont work). Once you type the 3-difgit or 4-digit number, release the ALT key and you get the character.

Here are a few examples

ALT + 0199 = Ç
ALT + 0177 = ±
ALT + 0699 = »
ALT + 133 = à
ALT + 277 = §

There are many characters like arrows etc.

ALT + 0188 = ¼
ALT + 0189 = ½
ALT + 0190 = ¾

Remember
the ALT key should remain pressed until you finsh typing the digits. Then release.

Oops, it does, kindasorta, but I have to hold down both the Fn and Alt keys to make them work. Amazing. Is there a way to get a little circle indicating degrees, as in temp???

Or you could check out the Character Map under Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools (for us Windows people). Find the character you want in the grid, and if it has an ALT+# shortcut it'll be displayed in the lower-right corner. If it doesn't have an ALT+# shortcut (or even if it does, actually), select the character, copy it, then paste it into your text.
