I carry a BOB in my vehicle, and I use it for day long bush walks. The negative thing is it weighs 13kg ( 28.6lb ). Not light but it has ALL I need. The reason I carry the whole kit is because I often walk in very isolated rainforest and as my BOB has everything I may need in a emergency I have no choice but to carry it.
Has anyone else weighd their BOB.

Conventional wisdom seems to be 30lbs is the target weight for a BOB. Not everyone will be comfortable with the same weight, so the best idea is to test it out on a hike or two, over varying terrain.

I don't really know. MIne is designed for staying with the vehicle, or at home. The older I get, the less I am able to hike long distances with a heavy load, and my wife has a bumb knee, really limiting her long distance walking. I do keep an empty day and a half sized pack in the vehicle, just in case. I can always load it up with the essentials and try walking out is that is the ONLY option...

Welcome...

Not that I've ever been accused of being conventional or having much wisdom but that sounds to me like permission to add 5 more lbs. to my BOB! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

err, my full gear is 36 pounds BEFORE any water goes in, and 17.6 pounds of water and 2lb boots puts that at 55/56 lb or so. the bin bags will be required today. put into perspective, i wiegh 130lb max, so kinda not good. though the biggest wieght would be droped quickly(12 2x6x1/2 inch mild steel plates for attaching my boat racks to the car roof). i will repost after i find a few more binbags to replace the ones i use.

About 20 pounds when asssembled, w/o water or sleeping bag, maybe a little more.

Ad water (minimum of a gallon in nalgenes, and a bladder when I get the tax money back), and the ditch kit (about 6-8 pounds in a vest/chest rig) and the sleeping bag (anywhere from 3 pounds for the summer bag, to almost 18 for the full winter system).

Right now, I'm using a one-piece TT MAV with a CountyCom EOD bag set even with the right shoulder strap and going left, and a SpecOps X6 for a pair of 16 ounce Nalgenes to balance it. Most of the gear I hat in my old ditch kit .

Next week, I'm going to be redoing it with a few more X-6s, one of the mess kit and it's conents, one for the FAK, one for water bottles, and one for the odds and ends. Flat wrap some paracord on a sheet of thin plastic, and put that and the garbage bags in the body pocket along the MAV body. The plan is to go to a 2-piece MAV when the IRS decides it doesn''t need all my money, plus the X-Harness. If I need to go light, I can hang hydro bladder and a SAW pouch full of food to that back configuration and I'm good for a few days.
