I saw this show on TLC, or the Science Channel a couple of months back and it was about a worst case scenario on Solar Storms.

Basically, if a large enough Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) were to hit earth, the U.S. power grid would be overwhelmed from the event, and large transformers would be destroyed. If I remember correctly, there are only like 10 manufacturer's in the world, and 6 are located here in the U.S. They need electricity to produce their transformers.

Anyone know the name of this show?

This is probably TEOTWAWKI, but, I want to see if I can find this show again.

I think I know the episode you're talking about, although the name escapes me at the moment. Actually, I think I've seen two or three different shows mention it in 2006, but are you talking about the show that is part fictional and that includes a bit where some satellite crashes into some New York park, and the only way to protect NYC's power grid is to completely shut down everything in Queens or Brooklyn to save that part of the power system from the coming solar storm?

I may have recorded it somewhere to watch later. I might still have it.

If I recall correctly, the name of the show you're referring to is Perfect Disaster and is, of course, Episode 2: Solar Storm. Here's the link to the series's main Discovery Channel page.

Thanks guys! Both of you have the same show. Hopefully it will come on some time in the future.

I've heard lately (largely from Art Bell's and George Norry's "Coast to Coast AM",-which is considerably Good, -but which I often take with some Grains of Salt), -that the Sun is Acting Up with some pretty exceptional Flare Outbursts, -right in the midst of whats suspossed to be the Solar Mininum!

If it keeps up like this, -I'd hate to see what it looks like in 5 or 6 years, -when it reaches Solar Maximum!

Its a mere matter of Chance and Time, -before the Sun just happens to shoot one or more of these Earthward!

Our Satellites and Ground Electronics, -can be Toast!

Even Flares not exactly aimed at Earth, can play a lot of Havoc!

And 5 or 6 years from now, -just happens to neatly coincide with 2012, -you know, -end of Mayan Calender, etc. This hereby may be a coincidence, -or not so much.

Any way you look at it, -its mighty strange to see the Sun acting up so much!, -right in the midst of what should be its Solar *Mininum*!

As an additional matter of Hit or Miss Chance, -one Half of the Earth will be facing Sunward when such Flare hits, -while the other will be at least somewhat shielded by Earth's nighttime shadow. This might also be "not so much", -as concerns the duration of the Flare's impact. (Earth's Night and Morning Side, will be rotating into such).

In a worse case scenario, -will we here in the Americas be on the Sun Side, -while say Asia and the Mideast "luck out" on the night side? With a Global Balance of Power etc, greatly shifting almost overnight due to an entirely Natural, Astronomical, cause?

(I'm referring to when such a Flare initially hits Earth, -not to when it erupts from the Sun, -I know there can be one to several day's transit time).

I'd like to hold some further "judgement", -until I further consult some well Reputed, Professional Astronomical source, such as Sky and Telescope magazine. For their such take on it.

But whatever, -Its Undeniable and Odd!, -for our Sun to now be Acting Up!, so Out of Turn and Character!

Whether or not this may end up tying in with 2012 / Teotwawki type stuff, -its a Real Danger to Earth, along with its Electronics and Technology, all the same! These are rather Exceptional, *Non* Garden Variety, sorts of Solar Flares!

What can we do about it? I'm afraid that this is only "the Limited Best we Can"!

(An Emergency Alarm had gone off in the Library from which I post, in mid-posting. Had to vacate awhile, -so I quickly submitted this post, -while it was still yet incopmplete. Thus the "Sudden Hang", -before finishing the rest of it in an Edit, upon my return. And so, that explains that. For anyone who might have noticed). Well here's an excerpt from the NASA website from back in 2005.
Quote:
Weird? Much about the sun's activity cycle remains unknown, Hathaway points out. "X-ray observations of flares by NOAA's Earth-orbiting satellites began in 1975, and CMEs were discovered only a few years earlier by the 7th Orbiting Solar Observatory. Before the 1970s, our records are spotty."

This means we don't know what is typical. Scientists have monitored only three complete solar cycles using satellite technology. "It's risky to draw conclusions" from such a short span of data, he says.

I think its safe to say that while solar activity is a definate danger to power grids and astronauts, we don't really know enough about it to really determine if what its doing now is an indication of impending disaster.

Having done one summer's worth archaeology in mayan country,I wouldn't put to much faith in their calender. I mean, really, if you saw Miss January.... Should we experience such a massive flare DO NOT field test your DR PSK's signal mirror. My Chumash wizard contact has his own take on Mayan and Aztec calenders, end of the world Hopi prophecies and the visions of Black Elk. To both you and Chris, -Something as to what you are saying did occur to me, -an hour or so after having made my post. In that the Sun's been known, -over these last 2 or 3 decades, -to shoot off some Flares and CMEs, ("Coronal Mass Ejections" for those of you in "Rio Linda"! ), -even during the quiet of some Solar Minima.

But nevertheless, from what I know and've heard so far, -I Stand by a certain exceptionality now going on, in these ways.

I've still to consult Sky and Telescope, and other reputable journals, for their Knowledgeable Take on this. [color:"black"] ScottRezaLogan
