Hi all,

Say, I was hoping someone could help me...

Here's the rub; in my BOB, I have all of my necessary items I carry. However, the problem is that it's all kinda just crammed in there. Here's what I'd like to do.

I need to find someone who makes small zippered canvas or nylon bags of various sizes or that can even custom make them, in various colors. What I want to do is color-code the items in my bag by placing them in the different colored bags for easy ID and emergency situations. Here's my list so far:

Red- 1st aid
Orange- signaling
Blue-water treatment/hydration
Green-navigation/wayfinding
Yellow-shelter/protection/firemaking
Brown-food/candy
Black-personal protection
Hot pink (or other bright color)-Survival

I think this will work well for my situation. Now, EVERYTHING won't be in the bags. These are just going to be "grab bags" to make it easier and quicker to get the items I need, especially in low-light. Or, if I need to grab-n-go with a specific item out of the BOB without taking the whole thing. Such as a first aid situation, where I don't need the whole bag and can't be fumbling around in the pack for it.

So, anyone know where I could start? Or do you have any ideas that might work better?

Somewhere in the archives of this forum there is a post about just this thing, but search as I might, I can't find it. You might give it a try, or maybe someone better at it than I can help out...

You could try zipper bags that are used for bank deposits. They come in canvas and cordura, maybe other materials also. Here's a site where you can get various sizes and colors:

Well, it was obviously someone of great intelligence. Great minds think alike... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I did do a search just in case someone thought of it before me, but like you I came up empty.

Thanks for the heads up.

Personally, I like these Granite Gear "air bags", especially the transparent ones. Color coding doesn't beat being able to see into the bag, in my opinion.

Ask around for a local seamstress. Be ready with a drawing and a list of colors (with backups). Check out a fabric store for possible fabric and available colors. You can buy samples in one-eight yard lengths (4.5" x full width). Regular nylon or ripstop? (Ripstop has same-color 1/4" squares.) Do you want all of them to be the same size? Do you want flat pouches, or do you want a pleat in the ends? Are they all to be separate, or sewn together? Separate, but can somehow connect together?

For a seamstress, check with fabric stores, service ads in newspapers, bulletin boards, word of mouth.

And don't expect WallyWorld prices. You're asking for custom.

Go to wally world or your local target and check two areas. The first is in the school supplies and there you will find a wide variety of pen/pencil cases in various colors for under a buck. They will also have clear inserts with various color frames for use in a note book. Then go over to the makeup section and you will find all kinds of bags that might in the size range you are looking for.

I was going to suggest Granite Gear stuff sacks....I'm not familiar with the air bags, but the ones I use have been great for me...only about four colors I think, but the come in a variety of sizes and they're durable.
