There are 2 basic classes of compasses; An orienteering type ( Silva/Suunto) in which the needle operates independently of the compass card, and a lensatic military type in which the needle and compasss are joined as a unit. there are many websites and books which can give better instruction than a forum posting. I would get Be Expert With map &Compass by Bjorn Kjellstrom and Finding Your Way in the Outdoors by Robert L.Mooers jr. I would also invest in a few TOPO maps of your local area. Translating a map or concept with known landmarks makes it a lot easier at first. Most important, buy a quality, liquid damped unit with adjustment for magnetic deviation. Silva and Suunto make many inexpensive starter units that will be fine for your needs.
