Has anyone thought of using those annoying AOL CD tins for a PSK? It might solve some of the bulk problems and the lid might prove to be a better basis for a reflector than the small mint tins, and the bottom could be used as a cooking plate.

Also, one idea I've thought of is using a canteen or flask, or perhaps a cook kit as a PSK container. Does anyone know of a flask which can be opened at the widest part and maintain a waterproof seal?

What about a widemouth polycarbonate jar (about 900ml?) as available in most backpacking shops? I believe in the US you can get a folding handle titanium cup to fit over the base of these ( that is - the flask sits in the cup).

Of course this is not a pocket -sized container....

Not a flask, but I do keep a large wide-mouth Nalgene container filled with PSK type items. The disadvantage is the round shape, but it does fit well in one of the pockets of my daypack. It holds a lot and is waterproof. Pete

Hi Mongoose,

Got one recently myself and have stuffed it full of fishing items. This round tin lends itself to easy line storage, just roll a loop slightly smaller than the inside diameter and put on a couple strips of tape to keep it neat.

FYI for the curious, this tin is approximately 1" tall by 3" in diameter, which lends itself to convienent carry and actually may help some of us to add the odd item that may not be thin enough for the rectangualr Altoids tin.

Another nice thing is that you can tell which tin you're grabbing without looking. Actually these tins are (IMHO) better sealed than the rectangular Altoids tins due to not having hinges, it is a beautiful slip fit. A "ranger band" works great over the seam on the outside.

Found mine in Eckerds Drug Store for $1.99, got a pair for $2.99. BTW, the candy inside (all I've seen around here anyway) is either a sour tangerine in an orange tin or a citrus sour in a green tin. They taste OK as well, basically a sour coating on a hard candy.

I've also seen the multiple packs for sale in Publix Grocery and Walmart Dept. stores.

Regards,
Comanche7

Hi Grim_Statistics,

Hmmm . . . the only AOL type tins I've seen have been square ( and just able to contain a CD-ROM and some paper advertisements) and thinner than an Altoids tin.

My feeling is that they have a marginally acceptable slip fitting cover and due to their design feel a bit flimsy. The only way I've been able to keep them shut with things inside is to liberally apply rubberbands.

I've toyed with them a bit but have not found a way to make them work well for me. I s'pose the lid or base could be used for cooking, however the paint/varnish . . .

Bottom line for me is that if one or more of these was all I had available, I'd make do, but there are better things around. (see my reply to Mongoose today).

Is the the tin that you referred to, or have I been hiding under a rock too long again? >grin<

Regards,
Comanche7

Here's a pic of a couple of round tins that'd work for a kit. The larger tin (4"X1 5/16") came with a flint and steel firestarting kit a friend gave to me. It would have to be taped to secure the lid. The other tin (3"X1") is the military issue sunburn prevention cream.

http://www.hunting-pictures.com/members/archer071/tins001.jpg
