Here are a couple of products that may have some value for disaster/medical care needs.

Hydropac

Blood Stop Gauze

For the water pack, I was not thinking so much of the valve, but the prepackaged water.

Likely, the product(s) would have to be picked up sold through a distributor (Redflare?).

I second the motion for Redflare to carry the Bloodstop, I'll order some.

It'x expensive, but I'd love to see this in an AMK brand expedition sized kit.

How expensive is expensive? Looks like you can buy it from them, but they tell you to contact a rep for price.

O.K. Sorry Redflare, couldn't wait. This stuff is too cool.

I just found a website that has it and ordered some. I had to register first, not a big deal. Getting the EX 2x2 and the regular 2x4 (you can cut it to smaller sizes).

Um, is there a "cart" checkout? After registering and going there, I only see "contact advertiser".

What's the purchase process?

Thanks,

The info on the website isn't clear... Are you supposed to apply traditional direct pressure to the gauze, or just slap it on and it sticks there and extrudes into the wound as it swells?

I like the idea of this product a lot better than QuikClot. Seems like a safer approach.

I could see slapping one of these over a bad cut and then applying one of the First Care Emergency Bandages over the top.

Also sounds like they should be pretty small and fit nicely in most FAKs. Heck, a 2x2 might even fit in an Altoids based kit.

See the below entry from Wikipedia:
Catgut is the name applied to cord of great toughness and tenacity prepared from the intestines of sheep/goat, or occasionally from those of the hog, horse, mule, and donkey. Those of the cat are not employed, and therefore it is supposed that the word is properly kitgut ("violin string"), kit meaning "fiddle," and that the present form has arisen through confusion with kit = cat. Another explanation of the origin of the cat in catgut is that it is an abbreviation for cattle which originally denoted not only cows, but all types of livestock.

Does anyone have any experience with Traumadex? This is another blood clot enhancer. It's a powder that you sprinkle into the wound. it's not supposed to heat up as I understand Quikclot does.

AquaBlox had a booth at a recent storm product show in West Palm Beach. They have a depo near me and I plan on purchasing a couple of cases soon. They advertise long shelf life and easy storage. Seems to me the biggest downside on a product like this will be expensive shipping.

I ordered some directly from LifeSciencePlus. They also have 1x1" size.

I got:

(8) 1x1"
(8) 2x4"
----------
$56
$5 shipping

The lady was very nice. She indicated she would include a non-sterile sample to examine prior to actual use.

Doh! Sorry John, didn't see your question till too late. Looks like you found another source.

Anyway, I emailed the seller and got a response almost immediately with a link to their website.
http://www.vetstuff.com/Home.htm

Go to the catalog link on the left and do a search for Bloodstop.

Ordered a box of 2x4 regular and a box of 2x2 EX for $16.95. Seems like a reasonable price.

It has always seemed to me that being able to stop massive bleeding from an injury on the spot would be a great thing. I have read that some products are better used by professionals (produce heat, scaring, etc).
Is this gauze pad product any more user friendly and is it suitable for untrained use? Is it effective?

Sorry Jon,

I cannot answer your question, as I have never used the product. I saw it in a trade magazine and thought it might be of interest. It sounds from a few of the other posters, that they may have used or knew someone who used the product and like it. Based upon the literature and my best guess, it would be quite user friendly and I would not have any reservations recommending anyone with some basic first aid knowledge to go ahead and use the product as needed.

Got them in the mail today. Kinda feel like a bonehead. Thought I was getting a box of each size because that's what the picture on the website shows. It's actually not very clear that it's for a single foil packet and not the box when you read the discription. Also, when I checked out, the total was for $16.85, no postage. When I got it and looked at the receipt, they added $4.10 postage...it came in a flat envelope.

Live and learn I guess. I'm more bugged about the postage. I don't mind paying postage, but it wasn't shown in the total when I checked out.

So, looks like John got a much better deal by ordering through live sciences directly.

Lukus,

Hard to say. I goofed up too. I thought I ordered 2x4s, but it was actually 2x2s. I got additional prices for some of the larger ones:

2x4 $8/ea
4x4 $17/ea
4x8 $23/ea

Redflare, if you can bring the prices down, I think we'd all appreciate it and I'd be in the market for of the larger sizes.
