Police find man trapped by trees in Stanley Park

Vancouver police say a man trapped for six days in Stanley Park by fallen trees is lucky to be alive.

Const. Howard Chow said Thursday that police on horseback rescued a 59-year-old man on Wednesday who had been pinned by downed trees in the landmark park at the edge of Vancouver.
The man, whose name was not released, said he was trapped in the park since a powerful windstorm on Dec. 15 ravaged the green space, bringing down thousands of trees. Police said he was not strong enough to pull himself out.

Who would have thought, a survival situation in a big city park.
The guy was even equipped with a cellphone and food, but had difficulty communicating his location.
What does one take away from this? Stay out of the woods during a windstorm? Pack a spare cellphone battery? ALWAYS be prepared? Wonder if a whistle would have helped.

From what I read, there are a lot of homeless people who live in the park, and I wouldn't be surprised if this man was one of them. Most homeless people seem to prefer that people stay away from them and, not expecting to end up in this kind of situation, probably would have thought you were crazy if you told him he should carry a whistle.

Of course, he may feel differently now....

Trees fall down in storms in greater numbers when there are fewer trees.This is called edge erosion in forestry because the biomass isn't great enough to absorb the wind ( think big sponge vs toilet paper.) Solution? Expand Stanley Park <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

That storm was sure a doozy.

I live about 40 miles suth of Vancouver and I have friends STILL wihtout power.

I had 2 large cedars miss my house by just a few feet.
