Camping with my son's Scout troop I found out that a hammer makes a fantastic dutch oven lid lifter.

Then, to my amazement they showed me that it can also be used to pound in tent stakes!

So far I haven't seen them try to use one to baton a hatchet into a log ... so far.

Drive up here to TN where there are oodles and get a truckload, Excomantia <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Seriously, even here, I don't count on them. The right type of rock (non-crumbling), size, shape, and weight is needed, and usually it takes a while to find the right one and I can already be finished with the task at hand by then by using my hatchet w/ its built-in hammer.

I have one of those Shrade survival knifes; my dad gave it to me years ago. Good luck using the hammer on it, very awkward to use. The saw is ok if you are not cutting anything of size, but the blade dose take a good edge and will take a beating.

That's it. Ugly, awkward looking thing, but it's one sweet tool. Use one once and you'll never pick up another traditional style machete. Very controllable and you can put a lot of power into the swing with that long handle. Worth every penny.

91gdub, right on! I carry a small Gransfor Bruk in my BOB. Our forefathers conquered the continent without much else (good knife, flint-and-steel, long gun). On yeh, if you get the GB hatchet you can shave with it, too (practice at home first). Try that with a hammer! <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
