Hammer? Pshaw, I carry a couple of large rocks in my pack! Sure they're heavy, but I walk taller knowing that I have the original multi tool if the SHTF.
I live in central TX, so a machete is a little more useful than an axe for most things. I've been carrying a Gerber machete the last couple of years in my truck. Not sure what it's called, it has the Gerber plastic axe handle mated to a blade with a forward curved tip. I've used machetes regularly for years, but this one beats any other I've ever had, including the standard U.S. army machete. Maybe it's the slight forward weight and the longer handle, but I've never had it skip out of a cut, something that's common with machetes and can make them really dangerous for the casual user.
