I went to the WA weather warnings site because I heard another storm front with wind was coming in tonight. Sheesh! They haven't even got the power on in many areas, and there are trees leaning now, waiting to go over with the next set of gusts. Grumble, grumble
But then I paged down the site a little bit... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
WEATHER SYNOPSIS FOR WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY
Jingle Bell Snow
Dashing through the trees, In an avalanche of snow? Plummeting over cliffs and rocks, Screaming as you go.
Beacon on transmit, Shovel at your side? Probe poles in your pack, Are all having quite a ride.
Tumbling through a chute, With a jumbled mass of snow? Is never any fun, No matter what you know.
So be cautious on your trip, And take a look around? Don?t be afraid to stop, And dig down to the ground.
The snow pack?s full of layers, Some are weak and some are strong? Shear tests and shear quality, Can guide you right along.
Think about the snow pack, And analyze terrain? Reflect upon the routes you choose And if snow will change to rain.
Remember don?t be swayed, But that little mind inside? Who?d lure you on a slope, And take you for a ride.
Oh, Jingle bells, beacons on, Probe and shovel in your pack? A mind aware as you stare, At the slope you?d like to track.
Ho, Jingle bells, all is well, Your action?s data driven? And best of all you?ve checked it out, And life is what you?re livin?.
In short, forecast models indicate that the time leading toward Christmas appear to be filled with an abundance of rather variable weather including fronts, troughs, brief ridging, snowfall, rainfall, local freezing rain, wind, cooling and warming. Such weather should produce a great variation in snowpack stability over time and space, and travelers are urged to remain very aware of snow and weather conditions, update their information regularly and test the snowpack often.

Sue,
While none of us wishes any more angst for those folks being impacted by the recent Wx events there, it is a bit uplifting to find that there is still a bit of humor remaining....thanks for sharing this gem.

Pleasureboat calls in while I'm on midwatch RCC duty at Tillamook Bay Oregon. I'm asked " hows the weather looking outside your window? I want to enter the bay. " I reply " dark and wet, it's 2A.M." Pause, "Uh, could you step outside and look?" I again reply " I don't have to, theres rain on my window." Pause, " Do you know who this is?" I reply, " your somebody on one of the most dangerous bodies of water who doesn't know enough to tune in the National Weather or Marine Channel and consult your charts." Pause, " This is Ensign Robinson, United States Navy on 30 days leave." I reply, " this is Surfman Kavanaugh, United States Coast Guard, also going on leave at 0800. Advise holding off until 0805 when our tower lookout can observe you capsize, Bar is currently breaking @ 12' with observed rogues hitting 20' Tillamook Bay Lifeboat Station out." Our senior cosxwain, allready awake and drinking coffee mumbled for me to go ahead and wake the duty lifeboat crew. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yep, sounds like a gung ho zero to me. Probably made Lt Cmdr by now.
I had little use of zeros (officers) during my tour. Basically they were around to make a mundane job truly dreary. Imagine being told how to paint a gray ship with more gray paint.
Your story reminds me of a Cheech and Chong movie line referring to code name "Hard Hat"..."Do you know who is this is???"

It was here: http://www.atmos.washington.edu/data/warning_report.WWA.html... but it's been... ah.... 'pulled'. I just looked, and the stuff before and after it is still there. "No Unauthorized Hilarity Allowed", apparently. I had the feeling that that might happen, which is why I posted it in full, rather than just the link. Like the guy signing off military radio: "This station is owned and operated by the United States government... aren't we all?" (A new deejay was found.) Sue
