I am curious as to what everyone's thoughts are on the Leatherman Surge.

It pretty dang big. I was contemplating the Surge or Wave, as they both had similar toolsets that I was interested in. Went to REI to handle them both. I don't mind the extra weight of the Surge, but man it is really a lot bigger than the Wave. And I realized that the Wave is pleny big for comfortable use anyway, might as well save the ounces for the times I'm carrying it.

One strange thing is the 'clicking' of the Surge. It's still a solid Leatherman, but when closed it rattles. Probably not a big deal, but at the same time doesn't seem quite right.

The removable/replaceable tool is kinda cool though.

I bought a Surge for EDC about six weeks ago, and although LARGE, I've found it quite nice. Having dual blades (one serrated, one not) is handy--I use the serrated edge all the time for daily box-opening, etc, and reserve the non serrated blade for emergency use.

Quite handy. The replaceable file/saw blade--would have been even nicer if this attachment was a standard jigsaw holder, but a standard blade can be modified without too much trouble.

The "bit holder" uses half-width bits. You could grind a standard sit of bits down, but...again, an industry standard bit holder would have been nicer.

I'm happy with it, it replaced an Xe6 that had gotten seriously abused (and lost after three years of service...*sniff*).

I have had one for six months and love it. It is large, though I find I don't really feel it clipped in my pocket (you can buy a removable pocket clip for it). It has very similar features to the wave, but I have found the added strength a plus at times. You can get a set of 22 double-ended bits for the large bit holder--it covers most bits you will need but not everything. The blade-exchanger is cool but the blades wiggle more than I would like. It is a t-shank holder, not too common, but it is a standard blade holder and you can get different types of blades if you need them. I am overall very happy with mine.

I'm glad to hear that, since Santa is going to bring me a Surge in a few days. I really wish that it had a perm. attached saw and file, instead of the system it has, but I think that I can live with it. The weight on my belt won't bother me, I used to carry about 15 pounds around my waist all the time...

+1 for having a multitool clipped in your pocket. That is how I carry my Charge Ti. I never notice it there until I need it. Great one hand pocket knife too! <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The rattling is the removable saw blade.

I bought one as Costco. Love it. It's too heavy to carry when I hike long distances though. I'll take a lighter multi tool then. I carry it on my belt daily. Wouldn't buy at costco again, the knife that comes in the kit... it's not all that great. I threw it in the ash tray on the truck, just in case I forget mine one day. Haven't seen it in a couple of months.

Only complaint, the straight blade on the Surge...and the knife for that matter, are almost recurve blades because someone ground them poorly. Took me a good bit to get that fixed but now it's fine.
