In Dallas I use, for specialty gear: REI - two stores: Dallas (LBJ Freeway between Inwood and Midway) and Plano (Park and Preston). I usually check the sales, most of their prices are a little high, even considering the member discount. Sportsman's Warehouse - Lewisville (I-35 and Hebron Parkway). Similar goods to Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's but lower prices. They don't have giant fish tanks to maintain. Websites: www.basegear.com - I recently bought a Leatherman Charge Ti for 74.99 with free shipping. I found their sales prices to be great, most with free shipping offers, and service to be quick. For food and basic first aid items: SuperTarget and WalMart Superstore. Good prices and many locations.

Another vote here for TAD Gear, Countycomm, REI, Sportsman's Warehouse, and Cabela's. Also, Campmor has some great deals: http://www.campmor.com

Here are my contributions: http://www.filson.com - C.C. Filson - IMO the world's best made outdoor clothing. Lasts several lifetimes - some still American-made. I often buy at Getz's - seems cheaper most days http://www.getzs.comhttp://bcbsurvivalusa.com/index.html BCB Survival USA - cool little knives, saws, etc.!

Here are a couple more... http://www.thebladeshop.com/great prices on knives http://www.colemans.com/surplus gear... good stuff (has someone already mentioned Coleman's?) http://www.altrec.com/Good camping/hiking gear Again... good idea for this thread.

I bought REI Stormproof matches when I visited relatives in Pittsburgh PA. Nice store and it reminds me of MEC were I buy most of my gear. It's basically the same concept, except they don't make Stormproof matches.

Roger that, I'd much rather do eBay than a lot of normal web stores, and even some brick and mortar ones.
It is competative shopping, buying stuff turned into a sport. Just the thing for the guy who needs to prove that he's "a real man" to himself, yet "sensative and urbane" to his other half. *grins*

No one has mentioned LifeView Outdoors. I think we need to work on our advertising.

I'm hesitant to mention it, since I work there part time, but since you asked: Next Adventure Specializes in new, used, and closeout outdoor gear. Some of our closeouts and used gear is pretty awesome, there's no doubt. J

Same as some of the other posts but also: Don't overlook Amazon http://www.amazon.comIn addition to new books they also have venders that sell harder to find new or used books. Also, check out their sports and outdoors / camping and hiking section. Items vary, but sometimes they have some good deals. For example, today you can get a Victorinox Swiss Army Climber II Pocket Knife for $9.99 (free shipping on orders over $25). Some are direct from Amazon, some from other vendors.

The Epicenter - Great place for hard to find MRE components. Emergency Essentials - Another good long life food provider Chinook Medical - Medical supplies and first aid kits. This is a great thread. Can I nominate it for sticky status Craig.

I have bought knives from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Their eknifeworks site is a great place to shop online.
Smoky Mountain Knife Works is located in Sevierville, Tennessee north of the SMK National Park near Knoxville. A couple of weeks ago I visited their retail store or should I say SUPER STORE? Three stories of knives. Their colections of historic items on display is worth the stop if you are in the area.

I've been very happy with this group: www.mec.caIt's sort of a Canadian version of REI, but more like earlier coop than the current Big Box store though.

Useful thread Todd! eBay is almost always part of my product/price searchs, and accounts for a lot of my gear purchases. Arizona Hiking Shack Well-stocked local store; use for smaller hiking-related items when internet-shipping cost would be prohibitive. Sportsman's Warehouse As said, a less-grand version of Bass Pro/Cabela's. OK prices. Wide selection. Close to home. Bought sundry camping/hiking/clothing there. Cabela's and Bass Pro Great all-under-one-roof experience. My place to browse, discover and handle new gear (prelude to price-shopping on internet for big-ticket items). REI Use mostly to inspect gear in-person; except for small stuff, the prices usually drive me to the internet. Lighthound Have bought flashlights, batteries, lanyard supplies. Great service. Competitive prices. EDC Depot Neat stuff for EDC geeks. Competitive prices. Reasonable shipping (and ship int'l). Bought Boker knives and miscellaneous "stuff." Safe-Light 2-for-1 deal and free "spy capsule with every order" are attractive. Marc is outstanding. Fenix Store Good flashlights. Free standard shipping (for our out-of-USA friends, they ship international). Competitive prices. Outstanding service from David & Gary. In case my wife sees this, not saying how many lights I've bought there. CountyComm Has gotten its share of my wallet over the years. Competitive prices and much of their inventory is unique. Candlepower Forums Besides everything you ever wanted to know about flashlights, including new lights to the market, the group buys are often excellent bargains. A source for hard-to-find tritium capsules etc. as many ETS'ers know. UMX Lanyard Factory Good source for most things lanyard. Website's cluttered, but lots of goodies. All-Pelican-Cases-4-Less If I'm going to buy several for gifts, I get them here. Nitro-Pak Mentioned by someone earlier. Reasonable prices; huge preparedness selection; good to deal with. Bought from their retail store 20+ years ago when they were in California. Newegg.com For most all of my "PC and digital photography gear." Good prices. Excellent service. Amazon Buy most all my books through their network of used-book partner-retailers. Oftentimes new/near-new books for really low used prices. TadGear Don't buy a lot there (stiff prices), but when I spot a unique must-have ... Dan

Kind of a neat place for all kinds of useful stuff, with a big Amish clientele, so you know the stuff has passed the "real world" test: Lehman's Hardware Store http://www.lehmans.com/Hint: send for the catalog. It's better and more fun than the web site.
