Thats the advantage of frame based vehicles, the center section is very rigid and the front and rear crumple. I've seen too many unibody vehicles crumple in the center, saw a Honda a whole back that got hit in the passenger door and it caved in and hit the driver. I'm glad I wasn't a passenger in that car.
