As i sit in the cold by the desk doing research papers and on the forums i wonder.....What keeps you warm for the cold and the winter? It can be your edc coat, in your kit, etc....

For me:
Thermal underwear does the job
Underarmour o yea baby the best in keeping you warm.
i have both of these in my bob.
i have a really funny looking russian type rabbit fur hat.it keeps your head and ears extremly warm. i would never wear it out in public but at home or when playing in the snow or in a BOB its a excellent choice.and its waterproof.its awesome!
socks- i have a thick pair in my bob.
gloves- the first thing on me that gets cold are my hands.and i hate it when they are.so i made sure to keep a small pair in my bob.
i have a really thick parka type jacket, keeps me warm, does its job. i look like one bad mofo in it. haha!

I found that the most important clothing item to keep you warm in the winter is a good pair of socks. I'm slowly stopping purchasing cheap cotton socks in favor of good quality hiking socks.

Some are made especially for snowsports and winter, but I found that good quality three-season hiking socks work well. Some come in darker colors which don't look too odd when you aren't wearing casual apparel. Most of the times though, I will be wearing them on day hikes or on snowshoeing trips. Some good brands : Smartwool, Ingenius, Wigwam, Ultimax.

I like Ingenius the most.

I also love my Marmot down vest that I wear during lunch stops when snowshoeing. It's really has a nice feel and keeps me warm. I don't like how down vests look on me too too much though, so I don't really wear it around town... Only in the backcountry.

believe it or not, Costco has had nice wool blend hiking socks the last few years in the fall. VERY nice, and inexpensive - They come in packs of 3, and I buy 2-3 packs every fall, but then again, I'm one of those strange folks who thing wool socks are also good in the summer

Hmm... I think I saw some of those at Costco the other day. I was wondering how good they might be. After reading your post I might have to try them...

I think I'm done with synthetic clothing, at least for the short term. I have some Under Armour coldgear with a ton of small holes in it from sitting near a fire off of which sparks were being thrown.

I do realize it's a first layer type thing, but sometimes it's too warm for layers next to the fire.

I'm headed back for wool I think.

My usual winter outdoor boots are Goretex lined and Thinsulate insulated, so they pretty much keep my tootsies warm.

Since you lose a ton of heat out of the top of your head ('specially those of us with no natural insulation up there), I wear either a wool watch cap (tried the non-wool ones and found that they don't work as well), or my old "trooper" cold weather cap (you know, the Sgt. Preston of the NW Mounted Police one with ear flaps).

My hands are either in a pair of GI nomex flying gloves (they are warmer than you would think), or some "ski gloves" I picked up somewhere.

For the old bod, I have several different brands of insulated underwear, all seem to work about equally.

When inside I have a very loving wife...

the costco here has a 4 pack of merino wool socks for 10$. I bought one and the next week bought another. They are the same as smartwool socks as far as I can tell. Even if they are 1/4 as durable, they are the same price for wearing around. I have started wearing them pretty much all the time now. For hiking and such I'll still wear the newer design of smartwool socks that are made a bit better, but for everyday wear... you can't beat 2.50 for wools socks.

Those are the ones I talked bout a couple of posts up. Until last year, they had the brand of who made them on them - Head

Got a pair on right now - but if I'm wearing socks, that's probably true (although I have a pair of smartwool and a pair of Thermax)

I find that a decent windproof out layer (that's jacket and trousers) make a drastic difference to your comfort level. Waterproof/breathable if you live in a just above freezing, high humidity, heavy rainfall enviroment like myself.

Feet: L.L. Bean winter boots, Sorel knock offs. Rubber bottoms, leather uppers and a felt liner. Good down to -20. Out in the boonies I also wear woolsocks and cheap dress sock type liner socks.
Under Layer: Polypro long underwear I bought for ROTC. Very warm, and I already have them. Otherwise, Jockey or fruit of the loom 60/40 Cotton Polyester long underwear. Its a bit lighter then the Polypro.
Legs: I have a set of wool snow pants I got from my dad's gear. About the best thing I have found for durability and warmth. They almost look like really rough slacks.
Torso: Woolrich sweater/jacket or something I picked up at a gear swap. Its warm, has zipper pockets and was all of $15 bucks.
Outer shell: Gortex/Thinsulate ski jacket from Cabela's or my Wool East German Army surplus (Ha!) greatcoat.
Hands: Liner gloves. Wool Mittens with leather shells.
Head: Wool watch cap and/or neck gaiter.

In all that, I can pretty much take the worst weather even in Wyoming.
