Hi everyone ! I'm wondering if anyone knows a good school offering coursework in wilderness survival that would fit the unique conditions found in Alaska? The only lead I had was for WSI out of Tok, AK but they emailed me back saying they no longer offer classes. - - - So far I've had no luck in locating a school which offers hands on training. Any suggestions you can provide would be appreciate. Thank you in advance, - - -

Try looking over the many schools Our northern neighbor Canada offers. The bears don't notice any difference ;O) Please consider the many climes of Alaska too. The treeless far north, the Brooks Range, marine penninsula are quite different.

Er, there are a lot of different conditions in Alaska. Chris and I did a fair bit of training there, courtesy of our rich uncle - I believe we both taught survival training there as well (I did). What specifically are you thinking about?

BTW, other than the collection of lithic garbage scraped up to Alaska from all along the west coast of the Americas, there's not really much unique in Alaska IMHO. Parts of Europe, Asia, South America, and much of Canada offer very similar or identical conditions to various parts of Alaska. It IS a special place, just the same <grin>.

Regards,

Tom

If you are a seaplane pilot you need to talk to Dr. Dale De Remer, Ph.D. if he is still doing his Arctic Seaplane Survival courses. He was born in 1935 so he is getting on up in the years.

I'm not sure if you are looking for hardcore survival training or more general "getting along with" the Alaskan wilderness. If the later, NOLS used to teach quite a few of there classes up there (including Denali) and I believe they still are pretty active. Good wilderness training--not specifically survival with a PSK....
