Has anyone experimented with oil lamp/stoves as far as cooking. Or are they to sooty to use?

I have in my storage shed amongst my other emergency gear, a Dietz (I think) lantern that has a rack on the top along with a cook kit that is made specifically for cooking on top of the lantern. I think I bought it sometime in the last 10 years.
