Grim, There were a few online dealers that carried a few, but sadly they are gone. I've bought several on ebay. Just look under survival. They pop up now and then. The average price is about $25. Most are the TRA-CON plastic box. There were actually a few manufacturers. Current lots are by AVIATION MARINE INC. 6626 Easton RD. PIPERSVILLE,PA.18947. Be carefull of the EBAY units. They should be sealed. I bought a few opened and missing some components and found one sealed unit a mass of rust and mildew. I am trying to get the Marine portion of a fishing kit review completed for a later article.

One of my "to do" items at summer camp this year was to try a little fishing from my kit. But with 43 kids from our troop in camp, I had very litle time to even look at at a hook!

I have been doing some research into the MIL-F-6218 "Fishing Kit, Survival" and have found that they are difficult to locate. After searching all over the internet, I found one unissued kit at $7.00. Of course, I quickly snapped it up. There have been a few on eBay, but they are expensive ($25.00) and in one case, incomplete. I'm surprised that these are so hard to find. The Fishing Kit is well-constructed, practical, and cheap. You'd think one of these contractors would market the product to the public. . . .

I have also attempted to contact wholesalers who carry the item. I may attempt next to call the contractors. I'm not looking for a sideline business, but I think there's a market for the kit and I'm sure some business would be willing to carry them.

Regards

I just received an e-mail from a company that sells survival equipment for the miitary and for law enforcement agencies. The price quoted for the kit is approximately $42.00!!! I assume that the federal government may get a better price, but probably not by much . . . .

I made a similar enquiry a few weeks ago, and got a similar price, PLUS a minimum buy of 5 units.

Mark, Doug has one displayed in is review of equippment. These are also available on EBAY as part of a marine/ aviator survival pack. Look up auction # 3203316452. these folks periodically offer Dutch auctions at very low prices and are good dealers. Another kit, far less extensive but handy is a NATO unit produced in G.B. I just acquired one for the long overdue fishing kit review

Mick,I have only seen these on EBAY with one major seller over here. My unit with S/H was just under $19 USD. Mark, these folks will repeat this auction in the future. I will keep watch. If anyone wants a TRA-CON style kit this is the way to go. It will be a fresh unit and what gear you don't fancy easily sold or traded. It is typically a mixed bag of "THE GOOD,THE BAD AND THE UGLY" G.I. issue

Chris:

I'm very grateful for your posts on this subject, saddened, that I missed the auction, and embarassed to admit that I was on eBay all week looking for the fishing kit and I missed completely this great deal on the survival kit. In a phrase, "this sucks." I contacted the seller who confirmed that there is promise of obtaining a kit in the future.

If only I'd cast a wider net when searching on eBay. . . .

Chris, have you aqiured a "fishing kit universal NSN 4220 99 1388693"? If you have I've used one a couple of times in fun on exercise and have made some little additions to it if you are interested.
How the price of over £20 can be justified is beyond me! Do you ever get the feeling that you may be getting ripped off?

Johno,Thats the one. I have tested 4 kits appropriate for fresh water, speed hook, gill net, my own PSK mini kit and tackle improvised from native and general materials. Hopefully I will be on the ocean soon to review several dedicated salt water raft kits. I have some personal conclusions about fishing kits in general, which I will share in the article. rediculous pricing is one.
