Ash Cakes are dropped directly on hot coals/hot ash. They get a light dusty layer of ash on them. The cooking and/or the dusting of ash is why they're called ash cakes depending on who you're talking to... Unless that person calls them Johnny cakes... Which is another name for them... LOL
