Have we determined what blanket, poncho liner, etc. has the best insulation value? I couldn't find anything by searching the forum. Price is not important, but durability is. A sleeping bag is probably best for very cold weather, but I just want the best blanket to keep in the truck.

Heat Sheet by AMK is my favorite. Light, reusable, and efficient.

This ones easy- wool, either a nice Whitney point blanket from the U.K. or a clean surplus military. The multiple disasters have pretty well used up surplus, but look around. Wool is superb for duarbility in a knock around truck cab, is fire retardent and lasts.

If you look around, and a little bit lucky, you can find a brand new USGI blanket still sealed in the heavy plastic bag. Makes for cleaner storage...

I love poncho liners, those, along with the P-38 have to be two of the greatest pieces of military gear ever. They are somewhat fragile, and not as warm as a wool blanket, but I still love 'em. The Thinsulate ones might be even better, but I have never tried one of those...

I picked up a couple of Pendleton Wool 2nds about 5 years ago that were inexpensive enough I didn't feel guilty using them for pickup standby or in the wall tent at elk camp.

However, I found a great alternative that in many ways is far superior to those two great wool blankets. River's West out of Seattle makes a waterproof fleece that is lighter, warmer, does not irritate skin, and well, waterproof. It is extremely resistant to tears, punctures, and singe holes, but should you manage to damage it, it is gauranteed for life. I've used mine for a groundcloth for prone shooting, as a wrap while sitting in a snow fall during a christmas parade, and as a standby in the back of my pickup. It is bulky, almost as bulky as one of the wool blankets. I refer to it as the sedative at home because if the wife curls up in the recliner with it, she is out for the count in about 5 minutes.

I liked the blanket so much I got an ATP/ATJ hunting outfit that was the bomb out hunting coyotes last February up near Estes Park. Yeah, it seems a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Those wool blankets weren't cheap, even for 2nds, but they were worth it too.
