I'm looking for a boot knife that is double edged, strong and durable. I usually wear an ankle high heavy hiking boots (Scarpa). I use SOG Govt as my belt knife for hiking, camping and misc functions. I also carry Wave on my all the time. I'm looking for quality all around product, not the "defense" type of a knife. I prefer plastic molded sheets and handles over leather and wood. Good clip or securing device is a must. Any recomendations?

Most fully double-edged knives are very much designed with defense in mind- asking for one that's not is almost a design contradiction. Especially in a small blade, there are blade geometry compromises involved with making it double-edged that are usually considered worthwhile only for a combat knife.

A boot knife is a defensive weapon. The Kershaw Commando is superb. Try some of the custom knives also. For a smaller blade, the Kantas Hawker is superb for both neck and boot carry.

Pol,

What Presumed said.

Double edged knives are not "utility" knives. Nor are they generally very durable or strong. One of the Cold Steel products may be an exception, but they are definately and unmistakably weapons. There are also legal problems in many (most) jurisdictions. Boot carry is also a hassle, in both a legal and "using" sense.

Take care,

Andy

There are some single edge knives which handle very much like classic boot knives and could be used for utitlity purposes, I would suggest you check with Bob Dozier and Bud Nealy.

That said I agree with everyone else here, and that a folder would be a much safer choice for what you carry on your person. There are many folders which are incredibly strong, almost enough to actually replace a fixed blade in most scenarios. Think Benchmade 710, Sebenza, Mission MPK.

A fixed blade is best worn as Second Line Gear, i.e., on your belt or in your pack, depending upon circumstances.

What presumed and andy said and:

be very careful with this one. Prosecutor's (me included) tend to look at a boot knife as an "ultra" concealed weapon. It is a matter of much greater concern than a concealed handgun. A handgun has many uses for which there is no substitute, other than killing a human being . Other than stabbing someone, what can be accomplished better with a boot knife than a sebenza? I don't question that you have a legitimate purpose, Polak, but you will have a VERY difficult time convincing someone else of that.

Take care,

Robb

I am not aware of any handguns that come anywhere near the versatility of a knife as a tool. I have nothing against handguns- in fact, I would carry one if it were legal for me to do so- but I do not follow your logic on this point at all.

>>Other than stabbing someone, what can be accomplished better with a boot knife than a sebenza? <<

"Other than stabbing someone"? How is stabbing someone better accomplished with a knife that was carried in a boot than with one that was carried in a pocket?

>>Prosecutor's (me included) tend to look at a boot knife as an "ultra" concealed weapon.<<

""Ultra" concealed?". I'm unfamiliar with that as a legal concept. Or a practical one, for that matter.

I don't wish to offend, but I have to say that I'm distressed, and somewhat alarmed, to hear that the law is being prosecuted in such a seemingly arbitrary and capricious manner. These criteria sound like they've been made up on the fly, not based on either the intent or the letter of the law.
