Hi:

Given the recent ban on sharps in airline cabins, I suspect people who wish to carry a PSK in their carry-on baggage are in a quandary.

I've been thinking about how to augment such a kit if all the sharps are removed from it and the idea came up of carrying a length of stainless steel wire, along with a Swiss-Tech tool to cut the wire. One purpose I thought of is that you could use the wire to make fishhooks.

Has anyone thought of how feasible this is, or any other strategies for dealing with the lack of sharps? Please excuse if this has been asked before.

Thanks

Safety pin or paper clip with be easier and stronger. You just need to find a stone you can grind the paper clip to a point on.

However, realistically, if a commerical bird goes down, you don't need most of your PSK. You either die, or they find the plane pretty [censored] fast and get someone there within a few hours (that is worst case, at sea, and you stick with the rafts).

Speaking of water landings and commercial air, has anyone ever successfully made a waterlanding with a jumbo? Has it ever been tried?

Howard Hughes in the Spruce Goose. The ancestors of jumbo control systems were pioneered in this aircraft. What Hughes also discovered, to his suprise and fear, is the lifting body phenomenon of large airframes. O.k. it is an amphibious ship. There was an attempted water ditching by a jumbo some time ago by a hijacked liner. It unfortunately broke up. Just because something hasn't been done, doesn't mean it can't be. As to wire, forget it on many carriers. It looks like a garrot.

Oh dear. Hadn't thought of that.

My intention was not to have a kit for a crash situation, but having a viable PSK which would be available wherever
I was traveling, should I not have any checked baggage. I guess I'll go with paper clips, or check my bag!

In any case, thanks.
Better yet would be to research the area between the airport you're landing at, and your ultimate destination. My guess is that somewhere along the way will sell fishhooks, steel wire, or pins - none of which are expensive enough to warrant checking luggage imho.

If you want to experiment with this, may I suggest some stainless steel guitar or bass strings? They should be relatively innocuous. Just be sure to learn a bit about guitars so you can chat up anyone who asks.

Even better, learn to play one...
