What are you guys doing for smoke masks or hoods now that <forgot the name of the company> has recalled their products?

Here's a very inexpensive -- maybe suspiciously inexpensive -- option. Wondering if anyone knows anything about them: http://www.smoke-sos.com/products.asp

Any other pointers appreciated!

Joe

Personally, I didn't return my EvacU8. I figure it is likely to be better than nothing.

I've been meaning to check to see if they have a revised product, but keep forgetting...

The link describes this product as a "cloth mask" with goggles. Other than that, there's not much on just what this is or how it works. I carry an N-95 charcoal impregnated mask and a pair of swin goggles, which probably take up less space and - without more information - work just as well.

Same here, never returned my EvacU8. Never understood the basis for the recall. Like you, I figure its better than nothing.

Craig.

Like others have already posted, I held onto my EVACU8 units. They still haven't reached their expiration dates. Besides, the recall period is over, at least to get any sort of refund from Brookdale.

I'm still looking around, and sort of hoping that either Brookdale or maybe another manufacturer will step up to fill the gap of a compact, moderately priced smoke hood that also filters CO. So far, the closest that I can find is the "Safe Escape" smoke hood. I think I'm simply biased against the product because there are a number of websites advertising it, but the websites are all a bit amateurish.

Actually, the product itself looks decent, except that it's not anywhere near as compact as the soda can-sized EVACU8. The Safe Escape smoke hoods have passed certifications from the EU, Japan, and Australia/New Zealand. The higher priced EVAC+ met the EU requirements, but that's it, so just going by certifications, the Safe Escape is an even more rigorously developed product than the EVACU8 or EVAC+. (And why doesn't the US still not have its own certification for smoke hoods?)

At MSRP of around $90, it's seems reasonably priced. Before the EVACU8 recall, I remember that if you bought lots of three or four, you could get them for like $50/unit, so the price has gone up. Maybe they don't need to try and get them into more people's hands as badly as they used to, after the EVACU8 recall.

Arney, I did return my Evacu8 hoods and I was reimbursed my full purchase price. Nice to see they are a stand-up operation. I'm awaiting delivery of two Safe Escape Smoke Hoods from Aeromedix. They're priced at $69.95+shipping. I'll post again when I get them.

Exactly, hard to believe a cloth mask could protect against CO and the like, and with no explanation as to how it actually works, it's very difficult to believe

Do all N95's have the charcoal in them??? If not, where did you get yours?

No, not al N95 has carbon layer. Some have. N-95 specification does not include anything about carbon layers.

3M makes one that has a carbon layer. Don't know the product name. I'm used to the european stuff...

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and nose around the paint department. They have several kinds of N95, one of which has charcoal added to it. If I recall correctly, it's originally for chemical workers.
