Like many, awhile back when I got my first Becker knife, a BK10, I was intrigued with the idea of storing stuff in the handle. But I was less taken with the idea of carrying around a 5/32" Allan wrench to undo the handle screws. Some bright soul suggested that I replace the Allan head screws with slot or Phillips head screws. But all of the pan head machine screws that I could find were too big to recess into the handle, and I did not want to drill out the holes to make them fit.

I have finally found some that fit perfectly. They are "Fillister" head machine screws. The size is 10-32 X 5/8. This allows me to toss the Allan wrench in favor of the screwdriver on my Juice. And should I somehow lose the Leatherman, a slot head screwdriver is much easier to fabricate than an Allan wrench.

Hey, I just picked up a BK10. The heft kinda' gave me a chuckle. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So... Are the slabs hollow or are you going to hollow them out or make new ones?

They are already hollow and you can store all sorts of goodies under there. I keep snare wire, 5 fish hooks, 25' of 6# test, a cut-down Sparklite, and 3 Sparklite tinder tabs under mine. It basically allowed me to remove all of the fishing and snaring stuff from my PSK, thus freeing up more room for other stuff.

Thanks, Norad! Now I can take the allen key out of my BK9's pouch.

This makes it more and more tempting to supliment my Ka-bar with a Becker. <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

How much wear and tear does the repeated removal put on the fit of the handle slabs?

None as far as I can tell. I don't know what it is made of but it is pretty tough stuff.

I was really hoping your weren't going to say that. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Maybe for the solstice I'll have to get one.
