I've recently re-surected the first aid/survival kit I had in scouts.. Maybee world events or just the need for something in case the s*** hits the fan otherwise in my life... I don't want to be without the bar minimums in case of emergency and this is my first kit. All this has fit into a mint tin and i'm pretty pleased with what I have so far but any criticism is welcome. I also have a few questions for the experienced person(s) here, and there are some items i have not found because either lack of options here in my town or haven't found the right post or webpage.

1) Iodine/Anaseptic
I'd like to add some anaseptic to clean a wound if needed, but cannot find a source for small packets or ampules...
if possible, how can I seal iodine in a glass or plastic container?
Can someone point me to a site that does not require me to buy large amounts?
Also is potassium permanganate a good solution for a psk?

2) Glass or plastic Vials
Can you point me to a site with a larger selection of glass vials, plastic containers, etc..
I want a soft plastic bottle with a opening large enough to put either matches, medications or my fishing kit..
I'd say one 1" diameter, 2-3" tall and preferably plastic with a sealable top.

3) candles
I want to get some long life candles for bob and car kit.. my only concern is the melting under high temperature (eg. car trunk or hot summer day in backpack). Parafin wax seems like it takes less heat from post(s) I've found. How about couglan's 9hr candles?? Does anybody know how long these actually last and what additives if any are added? Are there better solutions?

4) water bags.
I don't think I would rely on condoms for water containers and ziplocks prob too big for kit.. How about gerber milk bags? Will they fit? Does anybody have any other suggestions? commercial or otherwise! I currently have a platypus water bottle and carry that around in my car or at work...but looking for something for psk.

Welcome to the forums... Here's where you can find #1. I'd have to go through my links for the rest and by the time I do someone will beat me to the punch.

Here's the thread from a couple months ago on potassium permanganate. I'm pretty sure that no one uses iodine as an antiseptic on wounds anymore. You can get antiseptic packets from the link Massacre provided. If you want it for disinfecting water, it needs to be in a glass vial, Doug has a source listed here on the ETS site.

As for plastic bottles, I just picked up a Coleman set of plastic bottles and other containers at Menards (big box hardware store), try Target and Walmart. Nalgene make a travel set also, you can probably find them in luggage stores too.

Emergency essentials has a lot of per piece medical stuff for FAKs - I believe they have iodine wipes as well as other types of antisceptic wipes. They have a wide variety of single use first aid items.

Emergency Essentials

Gerber bags fit in all my kits. Another possibility are the MRE hot beverage bags, though those are a bit bigger and I doubt if the seal is as good as on the breast milk bags.

You can buy 1 oz PVP bottles that are in plastic containers and are sealed. Why would you want to seal it yourself?

We do not require any minimum order, buy everything (well almost ) as each.

That's fairly good. You need/don't need/should do:
1) a Signal mirror.
2) With the SAK you don't need the utility blade.
3) Get MP1 tablets if you can obtain them.
4) Have you wax dipped the matches?

Also more water-purifying tabs and a BIC-lighter/ flint&steel with some tinder. You carry a pencil, but no paper.

Also I think you don't need FAK-supplies in a small PSK. Why?
-You should always carry a seperate FAK (First Aid Kit).
-They are bulky. Because a tin is so small, the space could better be used for survival-supplies.
- A PSK-tin is usually sealed with waterproof tape and sometimes wrapped in paracord.
Therefor it isn't easy to acces the contents just for some bandages, making you repack your kit completely.

A pretty good kit! Pictures??

"Therefor it isn't easy to acces the contents just for some bandages, making you repack your kit completely."

I practice packing and repacking, and the tape is reuseable and I replace it often enough. Therefore to access a few "bandaids" or "plasters" should really be no problem....at least it isn't for me. A separate FAK is the first thing to go to, but I always keep about 5 bandages in my survival tin along with 5 sutures, and some Tylenol, antihistamine, and Immodium ...or about, give or take a little, what Wiseman's SAS book recommends. That is all though. And they have !@#$%^^&* come in handy before when I didn't have anything else on me! If you can't fit those in your tin, you definitely need to practice.

thanks for the replies and being so nice to a newbie who probably asked a few stupid questions or just way too many :-)

thanks massacre. I also found some gatorade "singles" that I can't find up here in canada so that will be added to my backpack and was a big help.

To answer your question redflare. my worry was to get some wipes or small packets for small wound(s) in my psk or bob and water treatment if repackaged.. my thought was to get a 1oz bottle and transfer some of it to a smaller container and store in my mint tin psk.

Will need to look a little bit more at walmart or maybee canadian tire, I beleive I saw a couglan's bottle travel kit but I don't remember how big the containers were.
I recently found some glass ones similar to the ones described on repackaging water treatment.... at a pawn shop completely by accident while looking for a throwing knife.

I forgot to mention that the water tablets I had were mp1, which I left in original packaging and will also have to look into a few more if space permits. Also my matches have been dipped in wax.
Reguards to the mirror.. Is there enough space for a survival mirror? I was thinking about using the technique from mythbusters in their firestarter/shredded plane episode and get an abrasive, cause I'm not wasting a chocolate bar (mmm chocolate), and polish the top of the tin for mirror.

I was thinking of a very small flint and maybee some fuel sticks and trying to fit a bcb wire saw that's in the mail..
To be perfectly honest my skill at flint is severly laking. Also thought about one handed solutions (in case other is broke) so that's why I stuck with only matches and fresnel so far.

I also re-pack my psk fairly frequently, party because I have already made small changes also so i'm used to taking out sutures (at bottom) and repack easily on the fly.
However i realize I will need to seal it with tape to make it water proof (if possible) or at least resistant. Also I've tried to include some basic medical as per SAS handbook, same as simon.. That is why I have added sutures and want iodine but i may replace or remove the bandads at a later date.

Here are a few pictures of kit so far, lets call it version 1.04

psk, bandana and platypus water bag. Also picture of tin before psk.

Good kit. I'd drop the tyneol with codine, unless you have a perscrip for it . More trouble than its worth.

You might add a phone #'s list, $20 or the local equivilent and your contact/ medical information:

If lost please return to
allergic to:
ICE in case of emergency please contact ( with phone #'s)

Will you post your edc so we can kibitz?
