Interesting reading. Survivalism as reading material for the masses. Looks like a new series on Slate.com

The Survivalist: How to live through disasters.

Thought I'd pass it on.

No replies at all. Not one. Tough crowd.

So far we've got "How to Survive a Disaster," Nuclear Bomb, Earthquake, Subway or Skyscraper Attack, EMP or Superworm Attack, and your Essential Survival Shopping List. Global Warming is coming up next.

Survival Chic is now the IN thing.

Yeah, everyone's weighing in on the gun newbie thread. I just read the "nuclear bomb" article. Good stuff. He's doing what I've been trying to do in my own life and writting--trying to make preparedness sound doable and worthwhile to the comfortable or fatalistic urbanite who'd never pick up a survival manual or visit a site like this. Hopefully "preparedness chic" will have some staying power.

As far as guns go, I subscribe to the "You'll shoot your eye out" mentality. Too many chances of an accident. I'd love to have one, though.

Oh, I'm a gun lover (nut?) and have been shooting since I was 5. It's just amusing to see the way gun threads take off. I have to fight the urge to weigh in.

You hear of gun accidents happening, but I have yet to see one. Definitely one of the safer and funner "sports" if you take the right precautions. I've introduced shooting to a small band of merry men, urban guys who grew up mostly hearing that "guns are for criminals," who now enjoy shooting and feel confident shooting a variety of fireams. I have yet to meet a skeptic who wasn't won over when given the chance to actually shoot (granted it's a small sample:).

As my daily commute is now 120 miles between King of Prussia and Mt. Laurel, NJ, every dollar I have is being spent on gas and tolls, so a firearm is out of the question!

Holy c*@p Craig. It takes me 3-7 days to drive 120 miles.

Yeah, it's killing me. Not quite sure what to do about it. I love the job and the company. The commute is a killer.
