so last week i was standing on a ladder at the firehall, on the highest "safe" step, not doing anything risky, unususal or anything like that, when the ladder went out from under me. i landed in my metal tool box and on the floor and fractured my right radius just above the wrist. i am in a cast from mid forearm 2 fingers. Suffice it 2 say that tyiping w/ 1 hand is rough, but wrse still is all the little stuff. (try putting deodorant under your left armpit with you left hand.)

anyway, l'll be in this cast 4 a while. i'm trying to use a leatherman tool with 1 hand. it's pretty ugly.

Would it be blasphemy to say that it might be time to get out the Spark-Lite? <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I once broke my left collarbone, left upper and both bones in lower arm wasn't much fun trying to do stuff.. and of course i'm left handed. Trying to do things right handed was soo backwards.. but you will learn to adapt temporarily.

Broke my left navicular playing rugby. Worst problem I had was tying my shoes, even worse than driving a standard transmission, which I had at the time.

I feel your pain and frustration.

A number of years ago, I was at lunch when an alert came across the pager for a chimney fire with extension. Since I was nearby, I decided to check things out. Since it was lunchtime, staffing was tight and the Chief asked me to help out on the roof. While there was one ladder already up, he wanted a second ladder (for safety) put up. Well, I got a ladder off of the truck, but there was no one to help or heel the ladder, it was only 15 feet, so I figured what the heck, put the ladder up and climbed. Just I got to the top, the ladder slid and I knew I was going down. As I hit the ground, I instinctually put out my hands to break the fall. While I was a little dazed, I got back up, put the ladder back up and helped out for a good half –hour. Once things calmed down, he called me over and asked if I was okay. I told my arms stung a little, but no big deal, he told me to head on over to the hospital anyway and get checked out. As soon as I got back to my car and took my turnout coat off, the pain hit me like a freight train. Fortunately, my wife was with me and could drive me over to the hospital, where the x-ray showed fractures in both wrists, with the left only being minor. It was an interesting and challenging 6 weeks.

Impressive!

I was once without my right (strong) arm for 5 months due to a shoulder injury. I feel for ya, Martin. I hope recovery is swift. During those 5 months, I learned:

1. The Beretta M21 made a fine one hander. The new .32 Tomcat should be a winner now.

2. The Spyderco Delica became my favorite knife.

3. The Glock (equipped with steel night sights) and the 1911's were very easy to manipulate one handed if you had magazines pre-loaded.

4. The Sparklight and mini BICs were a god-send.

5. The Ithaca 37 in 20ga featherlite version was pretty easy to operate and shoot effectively with one hand. It's bottom ejection wasn't as distracting as other brands right side ejection.

6. Carrying a nail brush to hold in the injured side hand made it easier to effectively wash hands.

when I was in High School I got both wrist slamed shut in a head gat working cattle, my Pops helped me out by going in to town and buying me velcro shoes. nothing like a fathers love and joy in seeing fruit of his loins looking like a total goof.
but it is amazing how quickly we can learn to do thing even with both hands casted up
