Pete:

I've flown a total of four times this year (two domestic round trips). Here are my observations.

- My shoes have set off the metal detector at our local airport twice. This prompted a wanding and shoe removal. I was told this was common by the folks there. Oddly, this didn't happen at the two larger airports I used.
- I was randomly selected for a secondary search on one flight (another wanding, shoe inspection, carry on bag search). The only things I was asked about were my disposable Coleman poncho and Power Bars (we were going to Disney).
-For the trip to Disney World, one of our suitcases contained assorted foodstuffs and some eating utensils. Apparently this didn't cause any concern with the baggage screeners.
-On none of these trips was I ever asked to power up my cell phone or Handspring Visor. I had heard this was SOP but I guess I was wrong.

At each screening I kept a positive, cooperative attitude and received one in return. I also make a habit of wearing business casual type clothing when I travel whether its for business or pleasure. I don't know if this helps or not but I care how I look.

Another thing I would add is that it seems like you have to show your picture id a lot more at airports now. Keep an eagle eye on it at all times. One boarding agent forgot to give my drivers license back with my ticket. If I hadn't made a point of keeping it in a separate pocket from my wallet I might not have noticed.

I hope this helps a little.

Chris
