I found this on the Campmor site:
Quote:
PLEASE NOTE: If you live in the state of Iowa, we are unable to sell you any water purification system due to Iowa Department of Public Health Restrictions. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Dunno, from what I gather, it might have to do with water treatment methods being harmful to underwater ecosystems, the whole fragile food chain that exists in an aquatic environment as a whole. We're talking tiny organisms here. Hog farming and the pollution caused by it may have contributed to laws being passed because of how the sludge (sewage) is treated

I've seen similar restrictions on several sites. I don't think it has to do with pollution, since using a filter doesn't add anything to the water. My guess is that since filters won't remove everything, they don't want people to have a false sense of security, or some other idiotic logic about protecting people from themselves.
Whatever the reason, it's absurd, I don't know what campers in Iowa are expecteed to due. I'd imagine any serious outdoor enthusiest in Iowa simply crosses the border to buy what they need.

I live in Iowa and I don't know what the restriction is all about. I can go to my local Wal Mart and buy Aqua Potable, or local sporting goods store and buy a Katadyn or MSR water filter. I went to a bigger sporting goods store this weekend and picked up my first package of MP1 tablets.

I don't know why there might be restrictions, but I can safely say that campers and the like aren't making secret border runs to buy water purification products...just fireworks <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I browsed around a little and this is the best article I found so far to explain what just might be behind the cause of this regulation:

http://www.nrdc.org/water/pollution/factor/stiow.asp

Also using urbansurvivalist's other good idea I also found this:

Potable Aqua is made by Wisconson Pharmacal located in Jackson, WI. They also make Atwater Carey first aid kits, Repel and Cutter bug spray and a few other products.

Well, there goes my hunch.

I have complete faith in our elected officials, and their bribability.

You'll notice I was asking a question, not making a statement, when I was unsure. That is the sign of a learned person.
