I just saw (probably it is old news) in the supermarket that Spam is providing the can with a plastic container that goes above the regular can so if you don't use the whole can you could keep the rest in this container. I just found it very practical and perhaps somebody could come with some ideas as how to use this container for a PSK.

I can think of a few ideas. You put your suvival kit in the plastic container and include an empty spam can with almost no wasted space.

I tested it on a gas stove rather than a wood fire, but I was able to boil water in a spam can without burning off the white coating on the inside.

I've also seen half height cans of spam in one store, so you could use two of those, or even one empty and one with spam still in it and have room left over for survival gear.

I think at one point they also sold cans that came with a plastic cover. Wish I had saved some.

In Hawaii, spam is a staple food item so there will be no left overs. <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
But thanks for the info. I will check the stores to see if we have it hear. The plastic container looks handy. Anybody have one or know how sturdy and durable it is?

They're pretty sturdy, not thin or flimsy. I got two and both lids snap on tight. Haven't tested them for water resistance, though. Nice size to toss in a waistpack or daypack.

Tom,

Bravo! Your idea is simple, ingenious, and useful.

Has anyone verified that a spam can will fit in the container, or must the spam be "sans can" to slide in?

TR, the can does fit inside the plastic container. That's how you buy it. The container is almost clear, so you can see the can inside.

I must have second rate grocery stores around here <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Three of them this morning, and none of them had this wonderful advancement in spam technology.

Preparing for the hurricane season led us to find some interesting 'new' things.....ie: things they didn't have last year. Individual 'sealed pouches' of tuna and spam. They are single serving size....I don't recall the amount they were....I'm thinking 3-4 oz serving size. Just enough for one and nothing left over!

As a Spam fan, allow me to bow to you for this URL.

The container looks freaking cool, and the varieties... Bacon spam... Smoked spam... Curse the first born of the backwards, imagination challanged grociers in my backwoods!

Hello. My name is Susan and I love Spam.

I didn't know they had all those other flavors. If you go to http://www.hormel.com/productlocator.asp, put in your zip code and then type SPAM in the #3 box, they're supposed to show all the stores near you that carry the flavor you selected. I hope this is true. I want smoked Spam! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

OK, I think I missed something....

Step 1, open can of spam
Step 2, remove spam
Step 2a, heat spam (optional)
Step 3, eat spam
Step 4, properly dispose of empty can, and wash dish and fork

I'm confused- what are the other eight steps?

IN THE SMALL VILLAGE OF POMAIRE, CHILE, IT IS BELIEVED THAT "CHANCHITOS", LITTLE PIGS, BRING GOOD LUCK. THREE LEGGED CHANCHITOS ARE ESPECIALLY FORTUNATE AND ARE TRADITIONALLY GIVEN TO FRIENDS AS A TOKEN OF GOODWILL AND LOVE.

Damn ... I just love this cut & paste. Ok. I'll turn off the computer now. <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Sue,

Excellent! Having a durable cooking/boiling container in a PSK without taking up space is too cool.

Jeez, and I thought I was done putting together PSKs. Time to start spam hunting for containers.

Thanks, TR

A Heads Up

I went looking for the spam container when this thread started and had no luck. I walked into the local Wally World and there were about 10 cases of Spam in the little yellow and blue platic Spam saver boxes. Checked prices to see if the can with the plastic box was higher than the regular one and both were priced at 1.98 each. I went home with 5 of them.
