I live in San Francisco. Last night there was a small earthquake several miles north, but we still felt it. At first I thought it was a large truck passing down my street, but there was no noise. I got up and stood in a nearby doorway, but as I stood there (must have only lasted 15-20 seconds) I realized that my BOB (or whatever you want to call it) was currently parted out - I was either using some of the tools for a project, or had lent some of the stuff out to a friend for a backpacking trip.

I'm feeling pretty stupid. So someone kick me. I need it.

Consider it a drill. You learned something today, and any day you learn something is a good day.

I kicked the table and hurt my kicking toe. Can I just waggle my finger at you instead? <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

They say we learn more from our failures than our successes. So, if you fix it, you're covered, right?

I'm getting there. I've still got to put things all together nice and neat, but right now everything's on my bed. I could have it ready to go in 30 seconds.

I had my regular clothing on, so I had my regular EDC: RSK Mk1, Surefire L2, mini Bic, walet, keys, and cell phone in my pockets.

My nearby edc man-purse had 1L water bottle about half full, extra batteries, FAK, Ritter PSK, city map, two garbage bags, notebook, paperback, BSA hotspark, extra Bic, etc,

So I would have been okay with all that. But I would have sorely missed my BOB wich has better shelter, extra clothes, a little food and H2O, and redundant EDC items.

I guess it could have been worse, I could have been in the shower! That's when I would have NEEDED to have an all-inclusive kit that I could just grab and go if it was the big one.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys and gals.

-Jeff

MrBadger:

Perfect timing! I just picked up my new steel-toed workboots and they need breaking in.

Your address, please? <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

the temptation to borrow emergency equipment is so strong. we were at the firehouse one time and the power went out. at the time the station didn't have a generator but on the trucks we carry a total of 3 of them. we never even considered taking them off...we got one from my house instead. emergency supplies are so HANDY but it's imperative to maintain a state of readiness. that said, don't wait for a nuclear war to take a band-aid out of your kit. I often use the kit in the car for tiny emergencies like skinned knees and bug bites. just restock asap. and never loan out your kit
