I noticed alot of mention of cooking oil adding calories and taste to food, which I think is a great idea. I was just wondering how people store or use for oil?

I guess where I'm getting at is for the BOB in the hot trunk. I rotate the oil at home, but:

1. Have not found a small enough retail container of oil
2. If I use a separate container, doesn't the "shelf life" reduce dramatically (especially in a hot trunk)?

What do you guys do.. My mother mentioned that when she was young (before she had refrigeration), she would store pig fat in the open. As a "spoiled urban-ite" that has always had refrigeration, I am at a loss here.

I use olive oil for just about everything. I keep a small can in my car and one in my kitchen. When I use the one in the kitchen I bring in the one from the car and buy a new can for the car. I'm no expert on the different kinds of oils but seems to me that olive oil keeps better and doesnt get rancid. In my BOB I have a stainless steel flask for olive oil that I fill before each trip out. It holds just enough.

Crisco has quarter pound bars of solid vegetable shortening in stores. I be sure to place the bar(s) in a plastic storage bag prior to packing.

Crisco is Hydogenated oil=DEATH. I only use it to season my cast iron.

Calories are calories, and when it's cold out, fats are good becuase they burn the longest. I might not use Crisco under normal circumstances for anything but seasoning (great minds, et al), but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it for something where I need a fat/oil that can last for a couple years.

That being said, it is mostly air and doesn't add flavor. Might even take it away.
