I'm looking for some rations for my survival backpack. I was thinking (and already ordered) a Datrex emergency ration and a BCB-emergency ration pack, for a total of 4500 Kcal. Is this enough??

How long are you planning on, and how much in the way of onboard calories are you carrying now? And how hard are you planning on pushing? I'm not possitive, but I bet that food in the belly is easier for your body is easier to access than backup "food" around the belly. :P

I like Datrex too, its easier to use, since it is subdivided into individually wrapped 200 calories bars within the 2400 or the 3600 calories vacuum overwraps. I keep three 2400 cal bars in my kit for 2 people, which should last us as much as 4-5 days.
One is mostly limited by water in a survival situation anyway, but food is good to have around.

My 1-person kit is designed on a minimum period of 72-hours. If I get into a survival-situation, I'll probably stay put. I've got enough 'Onboard calories' to keep me going for about a day or two if I'm really 'Pushing' it.

Then I'd say try it, do a dry run with your normal activites with nothing but water and the food from your BOB for three days. If it goes good, it works.

Description says all natural ingredients - any idea what it is specifically? If you do a taste test on the Datrex Food Ration I would love to know what you think on the flavor. Also the nutritional values would be nice.

I've got two large plastic jars of peanut butter (17,000 cal) and a medium jar of honey (3,600 cal) in mine, but I've got a family of four. Youngest is a picky eater so this is something that would keep us all going for several days. Of course if I can get my hands on bread that would make it better, but if not the two taste just fine stirred together.

I have no idea. Datrex was the name on the link you gave.

I've thought about ordering stuff like that, but it was so easy to just use peanut butter & honey. Very high in calories, knew the kids would eat it and good because I can rotate into our pantry.

Thanks. I would think you would want a 1 a day vitamin for everyday you are expecting your BOB to last you along with those bars.

Also based on my body size & appetite (assuming I had enough water) I would sure want more than 834 calories a day. Especially if I was truly in a stressful bugging out situation. 5 years on shelf life (if it's true) is a strong point to that product. However, I would recommend adding some other stuff. 1/2 cup peanut butter is 752 calories - you could dip the bars in it throughout the day. 1 lb is about 2656 calories. So adding a 2 1/2 lb jar might bump up your total close to where you want to be. Of course there are many other options as I've also got ramen noodles, sunflower kernels (no salt), etc. in mine. I like to eat!

An item I've seen quite often (on other websites) when people are talking about throwing together a BOB is cans of beans. If they are talking about green beans they are getting a total of 70 cal. or if they mean baked beans they are getting 490 cal. - not very much bang for the buck or lb. either. There are a lot of better options if you are talking about fuel for the body.
