Two of our camps offered "hot packs." the were cylinders 12" in dia. and 2' tall. Pots of food were stacked inside. The cylinder held a water jacket that was filled with hot water. The lid sealed the food in and air was sucked out through a valve in the lid to create a vacuum.<br><br>Larger, square hot packs were used to hold steam table trays of food for the dinning hall camps, as well as some of the cylinders without the pots to hold soups and stews, which would be ladled out into bowls.<br><br>Several of the camps were designated cold pack camps. They would receive raw food for patrol cooking in their camp site.<br><br>All of the food was prepared from a central kitchen, loving called Food Prep. It was designed to serve 3,000 meals at a time. In the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies, it was likely serving well over 2,000 at every meal.
